Shavkat Rakhmonov Targets UFC Star for Return After Two-Year Break
Undefeated UFC welterweight contender Shavkat Rakhmonov is eyeing a matchup with one of the division’s rising stars.
Nearly two years have passed since Shavkat Rakhmonov’s last fight, a victory over Ian Machado Garry at UFC 310. Rakhmonov, who has been a top welterweight contender for months, has been sidelined by injuries during this long break from competition.
Before his injuries, many expected Rakhmonov’s next fight to be for the welterweight title. However, after an extended period away from the cage, Rakhmonov will likely need to secure at least one win to re-establish his claim for a title shot.
Fortunately, Rakhmonov has a potential opponent in mind for his return to the Octagon as he resumes full-time training.
Shavkat Rakhmonov points to Michael Morales fight for his return after two-year absence
Rakhmonov hinted at a fight with undefeated welterweight contender Michael Morales in recent training footage.
“19-0 vs. 19-0,” Rakhmonov posted on his TikTok, referencing Morales’ record. His comments followed Morales’ own video suggesting Rakhmonov was the ‘final boss’ in his pursuit of UFC title aspirations. Morales has not competed since his knockout win against Sean Brady at UFC 322 last year.
Morales has secured knockout victories over Gilbert Burns, Neil Magny, and Trevin Giles during his UFC career. The Dana White’s Contender Series standout is recognized as one of the physically dominant welterweights in the sport.
Currently, the UFC has not announced Morales’ next fight, making a bout with Rakhmonov a compelling prospect. UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev is anticipated to face Carlos Prates in his next title defense in 2027.
The winner of a Rakhmonov vs. Morales fight would likely position themselves as the next welterweight title challenger, though Rakhmonov’s medical clearance to fight remains a factor.
