Islam Makhachev vs. Carlos Prates Fight Not Close to Finalization, Manager States
Despite widespread expectations, a fight between Islam Makhachev and Carlos Prates is not close to being confirmed. Makhachev's manager, Rizvan Magomedov, stated that while negotiations are happening, confirming a specific date and opponent remains unrealistic.
Makhachev, following his welterweight title defense at UFC 330 in August, expressed his intention to compete again before Ramadan, with January being a likely timeframe. Speculation pointed towards UFC 336 in Toronto on January 30th as a potential venue for a Makhachev vs. Prates bout.
Magomedov clarified in a conversation with Ushatayka, as reported by Championship Rounds, that "As of now, it’s not close to becoming a reality. It’s all just rumors and talk."
Carlos Prates has emerged as a top contender in the welterweight division. Makhachev himself has indicated a preference for Prates over Michael Morales, citing Morales's inactivity.
Prates has won his last three fights, including victories over former champions Leon Edwards and Jack Della Maddalena, as well as a knockout of Geoff Neal. These wins followed a decision loss to Ian Machado Garry in 2025.
Makhachev plans to continue his reign in the Octagon, dismissing notions of retirement and expressing interest in facing various challengers in his division.
